Summary: The research at the Stanford Center for Research on Information Storage Materials focuses on the materials science adn technology underpinning the data storage industry. The emphasis is on new materials and on understanding the factors controlling magnetic properties, especially the relationship of microstructure to magnetic properties. Facilities available include several thin film deposition system an in-site UHV Scanning Tunneling Microscope system; X-ray characterization systems, including Grazing Incidence X-Ray Scattering for determining lattice constants in thin films, Magneto-optic Kerr Effect and Vibrating Sample magnetometry for measurement of magnetic moments, X-ray Circular Magnetic Dicroism for element-specific moment measurements, Atomic Force, Magnetic Force, and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy.

Summary: The Center For Magnetic Recording Research (CMRR) is a multidisciplinary research and development institute located on the UNiversity of California, San Diego campus. The Center was established and is maintained by companies representing the vast majority of the U.S. magetic disk and tape storage industry. The Center's mission is to advance the state-of-the-art in magetic storage, and to produce highly trained graduate students and postdoctoral professionals, CMRR also serves as a catalyst for joint investigations amongst its industrial sponsors, government agencies, and the university.
