That computers fail will come as no surprise to anyone who uses them.
Yet, in spite of all the warnings about backing up data, and all teh products and services designed to do just that, data loss happens to virtually all of us at some time.
While office workers, particularly those using computer networks, tend to have institutionalised protection, it's the person working at home who is most vunerable.
Until you have experienced it, words cannot adequately describe the sinking terror of losing a day, a week, even a lifetime's work into the maw of a malfunctioning machine.
Viruses attack, software corrupts, and users do really silly things they ought not to, but the result is the same - data loss.
But if all of your problem-solving acumen (and that of your friends and the bloke at the local computer store) fails, the Australian subsidiary of Canada's CBL may hav the answer.
Whether data loss is the result of mechanical or electrical failure, virus activity, system malfunction, accidental erasure or re-format, water, fire or smoke damage, or file corruption, CBL Data Recovery Technologies has facilities in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Canberra, Hobart, Alice Springs, Cairns and the Gold Coast.
According to CBL, 78 per cent of data losses are caused by hardware or system malfunction, 11 per cent by human error, 7 per cent by software corruption or program malfunctions, 2 per cent by computer viruses, 1 per cent by other means.
Not all cases of data loss are amenable to recovery, but the company claims something like an 80 per cent success rate.
After assessing your problem and giving you a free quote, you can then decide whether or not you want to go ahead with the recovery. And, if CBL is unable to recover your data, you pay nothing.
